Scour Downstream of a Rough Rigid Apron

چکیده
A series of experiments was conducted to investigate the erosion behaviors of the noncohesive sediments downstream of smooth and rough aprons. A total of 33 tests were carried out with five different roughness conditions (k =0, 1, 1.85, 3.35 and 5mm) in a flume 0.5m wide, 0.6m deep and 9m long. For each run, s measurements were taken of the scour-hole profiles at the asymptotic or equilibrium state of scour. The results showed that the main characteristics of the scour holes, such as the maximum scour depth and its distance from the end of the apron, the maximum extension of the hole, the dune height and its distance from the end of the apron, were much smaller for rough than smooth aprons. A minimum reduction of 60% was obtained for the maximum scour depth with respect to the smooth beds. Also, the effect of submergence on the maximum scour depth was investigated. It was found that as the submergence factor increased, the maximum scour depth decreased. Finally, it was observed that the shape of the scoured beds was different in rough and smooth beds and that the mound region was more flat for rough aprons.

rade control structures are used to control bed erosion in steep small rivers mostly in the mountains. Scour downstream of this structure can lead to failure. An improved neuro-fuzzy based group method of data handling using the particle swarm optimization (NF-GMDH-PSO) is developed as an adaptive learning network to predict the localized scour downstream of a sluice gate with an apron. The input characteristic parameters affecting the scour depth are the sediment size and its gradation, apron length, sluice gate opening, and the flow conditions upst...

متن کاملEffect of Multi-gates Regultators Operations on Downstream Scour Pattern under Submerged Flow Conditions
Failures barrages or parts of them may be expected when excessive scour patterns are observed downstream of such structures. Severe and excessive scour may be largely due to unsymmetric operation of gates especially when a multi-vents barrage or regulator is being considered. Previous investigations proved that the scour patterns downstream hydraulic structures are functions of the bottom veloc...

This study addresses the design of riprap aprons as a scour countermeasure near abutments under clear-water conditions. It deals with the lateral extent of riprap aprons and the geometry of the scour hole prevailing at the apron edge. The study applies to riprap aprons acting as granular filters. The scour depth appears to be independent for a sufficiently long relative abutment length. Scour h...
